Where do we work?

The “30-yr Bird Study” is taking place in a one-million-acre commercial forest surrounding the greater Moosehead Lake area in northern Maine.

2021-2022 Bird Survey Stations

The challenge for the 2021/2022 field team is to sample the same array of forest types and age classes as 1992/1993 team (below).  The location and amount of these forest types in the landscape has changed in 30 years. The survey locations in 2021 and 2022 are in the same general area (left).  The 2021/2022 crew has sampled 422 points.

1992-1993 Bird Survey Stations

In 1992 and 1993, a similar team of young biologists (at the time!) surveyed 387 points for birds in the vast commercial forest in the Moosehead Lake region of Maine. The 1990s crew sampled all forest types and age classes, from clearcuts to mature, closed-canopy forest (left).
